And Then There Were Ten

 Dills chick
New light brahma chick - named Cowie by Stella
Back of Dill's chick - looks like a chipmunk

OK so maybe I have a little problem...As you know, we decided to get chickens this year.  Well, we started with 1 chick for each kid. Six chicks, no problem.  Then I decided I wanted one too. Jay said, "Sure, what's one more?"  So I headed back to the farm store and picked out my chick.  I am driving home telling Jay that I got my chick and he says, "Cool, did you get me one too?" Well no I didn't.  So, back to the farm store to get him a chick.  So we are at eight.  Cool that should be a great amount of eggs for our family.  Then......I did some research because Dill's chick looks quite different than the other chicks.  Turns out, Dill's "she" is likely a "he".  We aren't gonna keep any roosters, so Dill doesn't want to be the only one without a chick.....back to the farm store.  They had 1 day old chicks yesterday.  SO CUTE!!!!! Dill chose an araucana baby. She is housed alone because she can't be mixed with the "bigs" yet.  Well, she was chirping and  chirping and chirping.  She was lonely in there all alone......back to the farm store.  We got her a buddy.  She is a light brahma.  So now we have 10! Good thing we built a LARGE coop!

Chickens

Dillon and Ruby got buff orpinton hens - above
Rosie, Naomi and Zaria got Barred Rock hens -above
Adam, Jason and I got Silverlace Wyandotte chicks - above

When we moved to the country, one of the things we told the kids we wanted to do was get some farm animals.  We decided to start with chickens. We headed out to the the local farm store and each of the kids got to pick out their own chicken.  They are so excited and have been holding them and watching them all afternoon! Let's hope their enthusiasm holds when they have to clean out their coop and collect eggs and feed and water them!!!
